The countdown is on … To what, you might ask? Well, as May begins, we are one year out from celebrating the Society’s centennial anniversary (and the CPA profession’s in Indiana too). On May 6, 1915, the Indiana Association of Certified Public Accountants was incorporated. This happened just two months after legislation was passed creating the CPA designation in Indiana.
INCPAS (we changed our name in 1979) has a storied past, and we plan to spend the next year telling you about it – leading up to a special CPA Celebration on May 15, 2015. Mark your calendars for the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis. But while the last 100 (99) years have been great, we have an even brighter future. We’ll be using this milestone to set the stage for the years ahead. Celebrate the past while planning for the future.
Starting this month, you’ll be seeing our 100 year anniversary logo a lot. You’ll also find a new page in each issue of CPA IN Perspective with tidbits and anecdotes about our history. And we’ll be adding some things to incpas.org as we go along, including a memory board where members are encouraged to share their INCPAS memories. And we’re not going to wrap up the celebration next May 15. We’re planning to celebrate throughout 2015, our entire anniversary year.
And there’s more. We are working on a commemorative book that will be available in the spring of 2015. An author/historian is working with us on the project, and it is sure to be a collector’s item. There will also be a short documentary-style video and other web features as well. And of course there will be some 100 year anniversary items that you’ll see at the Professional Issues Update this fall and other Society events. A centennial anniversary only happens once, and we want to make sure we do it right.
Again, as much as it’s a celebration, it’s also a catalyst. The CPA profession is changing at a rapid pace, and INCPAS is changing right along with it. We’ll be embarking on a project we’re calling “INCPAS 2025” this year where we’ll look at opportunities, threats, and ways to position the Society to meet member needs 10 or more years down the road. Look for our findings and recommendations in about a year.
And then there’s the CPA Center of Excellence®, which you’ve been hearing about for some time. There are many elements to this initiative, but they are all based on the concept of helping CPAs become adaptive, agile and dynamic to meet new challenges. Over the next few months you’ll see a quick start guide for improving your critical success skills, innovative new online and live learning opportunities, and a new online community that will enable members to connect and share knowledge.
So join us in this celebration. Both the past and the future. It’s an exciting time at INCPAS!
